God Centered

The reason we gather together is for God.  While we want to help our community and meet the needs of our friends and neighbors, this is not our primary focus or the place from which we start.  Our question is:  “What does God want?”  God has revealed Himself most clearly in the text of the 66 books of the Bible. It is to the Holy Scripture that we are all constantly going together to see how we might better serve  and love God.  The Glory of God is of first importance.

Gospel Driven

God is greatly glorified in the Gospel of Jesus.  The Gospel is the true historic account of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection.  The Gospel is good news, the best news in the world.  It answers the deepest problem humanity has: “How can we know God?”  The Gospel, the Good News, is understood in four components:

1. A correct understanding of God.  God is righteous and holy and He takes sin seriously.  God  never compromises with sin.  His boundaries are literally set in stone and the line of His law never moves.

2. Humanity—you and I.  We are sinners.  Who can say that they have never broken the Law of God?  No one.   Because God is just, His standards have not moved.  So, we all stand condemned, and there is nothing we can do to make right the wrongs we have committed. Thank God the story does not end there.

3. Jesus, the answer to our most fundamental problem.  God loves us, and He, out of this world of failure and hurt, is calling a people to Himself.  Jesus, who is God,  came to earth, born of a virgin, lived a perfect life without sin, was put to death on a cross even though he lived and loved perfectly.  His death and resurrection were the substitution for anyone who believes.  Our sin can be forgiven in the Glory of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection.  All that remains is our response.

4. It is God, the Holy Spirit, through the Biblical message of the Gospel that enables us to respond.  In the light of the Good News of the Gospel, we are left only to repent and believe in Jesus.  Saving faith is not achieved by anything we do. It is accomplished by seeing ourselves as  sinners and acknowledging our inability to save ourselves, and then trusting and believing in Christ as our only and great hope in life and death.

The Gospel is the best news, and therefore, we at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church do not want to just assume it or treat it as a little thing.  It is the main truth that drives our life together, contending as one for the Gospel.

Great Commission Commanded

The Gospel is Good News and it is the center of our life together here at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church.  However, it is not just for us.  We are commanded by the Scripture to “take the Gospel of Christ to all nations, and as we go we make disciples, teaching them to obey all that Christ has commanded” (Matt 28:19-20).

The Great Commission is a commandment of our Lord Jesus that we take seriously.

We wish to do missions beginning with our own friends and family and extending to all parts of the world.   We pray that the Holy Spirit will empower us to be and to make us missionaries and disciples who love and obey the command of our great God and  Savior, Jesus.

Grounded Christian Community

While the door to our church is wide open to anyone to come to learn what it means to be a follower of Christ, our membership is a covenant.  We truly do want to welcome all people from every walk of life and belief system to visit and take part in our community.  However, our membership is meaningful.  We hold to a set of beliefs (doctrines) and have requirements for membership.

Our friendships are wide, but our family rests on the Faith once delivered to the saints.  The Faith we confess and the values we hold are not ones we invented, but rather they are bound first and ultimately to the Scripture and are informed by the Reformation and our rich Baptist history.  We are a confessing, regenerated community grounded in the Gospel of God’s love and a practical love for each other.

If you are interested in joining our membership, there are some requirements:

1. Saving Faith in Jesus as understood in the Gospel.

2. Belief in the inerrant, sufficient Word of God as your authority for life, faith, and practice.

3. Believer’s Baptism.

We do not expect you to be able to articulate every area of your faith.  We are all growing and learning together.  If you are a new Christian or feel like you do not know much of the scriptures, we want you to learn with us.  We also do not require agreement on secondary issues outside the scope of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 and the Abstract of Principles.
